For my first column, my long-time favourite: Chau Veggie Express. This community-based eatery serves up Vietnamese-inspired vegan dishes. From hearty bowls, to flavourful soups and veg-packed salads, it’s hard to go wrong or hungry. I first visited Chau at their East Van location, but if you don’t mind braving the tourists (and the birds), I recommend making a trip to their spot on Granville Island – especially by Aqua Bus!

Last weekend, after a morning hike, followed by a walk along Spanish Banks, I was definitely ready for dinner. Enter: Chau Veggie Express. I went with #17, the Golden Temple Soup: a light turmeric coconut curry broth – creamy, slightly spicy, and a hint of lemongrass –  full of steamed seasonal vegetables, soft tofu, yam, quinoa, and of course, some kale. The comforting dish hit the spot and filled me up after an active day around the city.

Hungry for something a little more? I recommend getting an order (or two) of their perfectly crispy ‘nonla’ spring rolls, served with a lemon vegan ‘fish’ sauce.

And whether you’re gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, or none of the above, I’ve always found Chau happy to accommodate substitutions, customize your meal, and answer any questions about menu ingredients.
